Let’s face the facts. Most ladies do not want “mustaches.” That’s why unsightly upper lip hair can be quite annoying for us girls. In fact, upper lip hair is even worse for brunettes, since the hair is darker and therefore easier to see. Luckily, this is not something that any woman should have to deal with on a regular basis. There are many different types of hair removal products available on the market. Many of which are made especially for upper lip hair removal. These products come in many forms such as hair removal creams, waxing strips, regular shaving, epilation, and laser hair removal. In this article, we will take an in depth look at each procedure and give you the information you need to know in which to make the best decision.
Hair Removal Creams
Hair removal creams are popular staple in big chain stores like Target and Walmart, as well as lower budget drugstores. The good things about this particular hair removal method is that it is easy to get a hold of and is quite affordable. One popular brand that come to mind is Nads.
Nads has its own facial hair removal cream. According to the Nads website, the cream is formulated with Almond Oil and Calendula. These ingredients help soften and soothe the area that is being treated. The Nads Cream is ideal for face, chin, and upper lip. The box contains a 28 gram tube of cream and a 15 gram tube of soothing face balm.
When you apply the cream, you must use a thick and even layer. DO NOT rub in. You should leave the cream on the upper lip area for at least 4 minutes. Test to see if the hair is coming off by rubbing a small area with a towel. If not, leave the cream on for a little longer, but DO NOT leave on past 10 minutes. You can then wipe the cream off with a damp towel and then finish off with the face balm, if you so choose. Be warned, Nads products usually tend to have a very chemical like odor. Some products are formulated with ingredients like baby oil. I would recommend these if you are not allergic. The smell is a lot better.
Before using the cream, it is important to know that your skin could react badly to it. So, if any redness occurs, stop using the cream immediately! This cream is only supposed to be used on the cheeks, upper lip, and chin. Do not use on any type of irritated skin.
Nads is one of the most well-known companies specializing in hair removal. Naturally, they also have a waxing strip product for the face. However, they also have some competition in the waxing strip department. Veet (another well-known hair removal company) also has a waxing strip product for the face.
Nads Facial Wax Strips promises up to 4 weeks of smooth skin and that there is no heat and no mess. The strips are made of highly durable fabric, making it easier to use on your face. The wax is made from natural beeswax, which is not only great for the skin, but also makes for a much stronger adhesive.
In order to use these wax strips, you must make sure that your skin is free from any oils or moisturizers. Your skin must be totally clean before usage. Rub the strips in the palms of your hands, this action warms the wax. Then pull the strip apart, creating two strips. Now, you can apply a strip onto the desired area. Make sure to apply with pressure and firmly smooth the strip down onto your skin. Leave strip on for a few minutes and remove.
Like the previous product, try testing out the wax on your arm first in order to test for an allergic reaction. Do not use this product if you are using any dermatological products on your face or if you have any type of irritation on the area.
The Veet Wax Strips are specifically formulated for consumers who have sensitive skin. The product contains naturally sourced argan oil and is different from other wax strip formulas. How are the Veet wax strips different? The wax used acts as a liquid when it is applied. This makes for easier application and less mess.
The box contains 12 face wax strips, 8 bikini and underarm strips, and 4 finish wipes. This box set is quite useful because of its extra features. You can target more areas of hair! The Veet wax strips directions are similar to the Nads, only Veet suggests using their wipes or baby oil on your skin once you are done.
Try testing out the wax on your arm first in order to test for an allergic reaction. Do not use this product if you are using any dermatological products on your face or if you have any type of irritation on the area. Veet also cautions against using hair removal products on scars or if you have diabetes.
Veet has another waxing method that has a little extra. This product comes with a spatula. The Veet Botanic Inspirations Warm Sugar Wax promises to give the consumer smooth skin for 28 days. This product also uses argan oil and moisturizes the skin. The box contains one wax jar, 12 wax strips, and the spatula.
You can warm the wax by putting it warm water for 10 minutes or in the microwave for 45 seconds. The instructions are the same with the regular wax strips. The spatula is an optional tool, but perhaps it can make the experience a bit easier.
Shaving is probably a practice that nearly everyone is familiar with. Though, I wouldn’t advise this method for routine upper lip hair removal, since it can be a bit abrasive for such a tender area. However, if can be a life saver if you are in a hurry.
There are three different options that can be taken into account when shaving the upper lip area. You can do a wet or dry shave with a regular razor. Or you can opt to use an electric razor.
Be cautious if attempting a dry shave (without water or shaving cream). It will save you some time, however it can be rough on the area and be easily cut. Do small, slow strokes in the direction that the hair grows. A wet shave is almost exactly the same, but will reduce the chance of cuts (with water and/or shaving cream).
An electric razor is probably your best bet to avoid razor cuts. I would recommend finding a “body grooming” type on Amazon, since those can typically be used from head to toe. The only real downsides to the shaving method is the occasional razor burn and the fact that the hair grows back at its usual rate.
Always remember when shaving with any type of razor to shave against the grain of the hair. This technique reduces the chances of any ingrown hairs popping up. Of course, there is always a chance that the bumps can still occur. There are many razor bump creams and gels available on the market to remedy this.
Apparently, epilation for some can causeirritation. Most beauty gurus advise that you epilate 24 hours before any big event, thus giving the irritation time to dissipate. It is also suggested that you epilate after you are take a warm bath or shower. That way you are relaxed and the warmness of the water will make the hair easier to remove. But since this article is talking about upper lip hair removal, the shower/bath step may be optional depending on your preferences.
The epilator itself is an electronic device (it kind of reminds me of a computer mouse) that is used to grasp multiple hairs at the same time and pull them out. Think of the device as electric tweezers. Using an epilator results in not having to remove hair as frequently. However, the down side is that epilators are thought to be a more painful method to hair removal. This is because of the multiple hair removal. The epilator does not remove hair from the epithelium or epidermis.
There are three different types of epilators: the spring type, rotating disk type, and the tweezer type. The spring type isn’t really around much anymore, since it was the first and most primitive type. The rotating disk type had some kinks and is not so easily used. The tweezer type is the most modern and known model. A series of metal plates is what causes the tweezing effect and removes the hair.
Many modern epilators have rechargeable batteries and can be used wet or dry. This allows the user to be able to use them in the shower and use the optional shaving cream or gel. The cream and/or gel product can also cut down on the pain and irritation that is associated with the device.
The painful quality may be a deal breaker for some, but the epilator does have its good points. It’s not a very large device, so it is travel ready. It doesn’t need creams or waxes, so you save money and there’s no mess! (Though as mentioned above the creams and gels can still be used). It all depends on what kind of features you have in mind and how much money you are willing to spend. An epilator can come in many different forms such as with a cord, rechargeable batteries, and non-rechargeable batteries. There on no parts on the epilator that need to be regularly replaced, another plus!
Be sure to run the epilator in the way that the hair grows in order to avoid ingrown hairs. You can also try wetting the area with warm water before you use the epilator. This is a common hack that softens the hair. If you chose to epilate be sure to checkout our list of the best epilators currently on the market.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is without a doubt the most expensive method on the list. It also has the most risk involved. So, I would only suggest this method to those who have the money to spend and/or have tried everything else to no avail.
Laser hair removal is performed by beaming highly concentrated light into the hair follicles. The pigment of the hairs absorb the light and the hair is removed. Lasers can remove hair from any area on the body and does have its benefits. These benefits are that when one receives laser hair removal, the hair will USUALLY not grow back. Though, some cases have been reported that the procedure was unsuccessful. Some reports of skin scarring has also been known to pop up from time to time. That is why it is a good idea to talk to a specialist one on one in order to see if this is the right option for you.
When preparing to have laser hair removal, it is important that you refrain from having any hair from the target area removed for six weeks. This is because the laser treatment targets the roots. Try avoiding an excessive amount of sun exposure before and after the treatment as well. Sun supposedly decreases its effectiveness. This is also a six week time frame for both before and after.
As mentioned before, laser hair removal is very expensive and can cost you thousands of dollars. Please reflect on your options and do your research before undergoing a medical procedure. Because that is exactly what laser hair removal is, a medical procedure. It is an extreme measure for hair removal.
